I don't know what to call this. Maybe that's why I've waited so long to write it. Some things become so deeply woven into you that giving them a name feels unnecessary. You know them by the space they take up. By the silence they leave behind when they're gone. By the strange way your hands still reach for them long after you've decided you shouldn't. And I have decided. I think. There is a part of me that knows I have to walk away, even while another part is still standing there, looking back. I won't say goodbye. That word asks for a kind of certainty I don't have. Instead, I'll simply leave this here: if you ever come looking for me, I don't know if I will be strong enough to turn away. Maybe I should be. Maybe that's exactly what I should learn. But some places inside me were changed permanently, and yours is one of them. No matter what I do with the rest of my life, I don't know how to unmake the room that was made for you. So it will remain. Untouched. Reserved. I won't stand at the door forever. At least, I hope I won't. I have to learn how to walk without constantly wondering whether you're somewhere behind me. But if our paths ever cross again— I don't know. I just know that something in me would still recognize you. Even after everything. Even knowing what I know. Even knowing better. There are things we love that we cannot keep. There are things we miss that we should never reach for again. And somehow, both things can be true. So this isn't a promise. It's not an invitation. It's just the truth, left somewhere between leaving and staying: A part of me will always remember how it felt to have you here. And perhaps that is enough. Perhaps it has to be. For now, I'm walking away without closing the door. Just trying not to look back.
